Even as Carly Fiorina gains momentum in the republican primary, her past role as CEO of Hewlett Packard is coming back to haunt her in ways which go far beyond her mere incompetence, layoffs, and firing. Even as she talks tough against the regime in Iran, it turns out she defied an Executive Order and sold millions of dollars in HP computers and printers to that same Iran regime. Suddenly, it appears we have the first real scandal of the 2016 election cycle.
It turns out this wasn’t a one-time thing either. At one point Carly Fiorina was illegally selling so much HP product to Iran that the company had nearly half the printer marketshare in the rogue nation. Worse, she tried to hide it by using a third party company. According to MSNBC, the sales were in violation of an Executive Order in place from President Bill Clinton. Ultimately the SEC caught her red handed, according to the Boston Globe, and put a stop to the law-breaking. So will this sink her campaign?
The issue had largely been forgotten in the zeitgeist after she was fired from Hewlett Packard for incompetence and then subsequently lost a state election and disappeared from the public eye. However now that Carly Fiorina is back on the national stage and once again under public scrutiny, her illegal behavior at HP is suddenly the center of attention again. It’s highly unlikely she’ll face any criminal charges in the matter. But considering her hardline stance on Iran and her opposition to President Obama‘s peace deal in favor of a path to war, and the fact that Iran would be conducting its business with computers she sold to them during any such war, it’s difficult to see how she weathers this scandal.
