President Obama is holding a hastily announced press conference on Friday afternoon, after having spent Thursday vowing to retaliate against Vladimir Putin’s Russia for having meddled in the 2016 election. It’s not yet clear what Obama will announce. but the event appears to be positioned as a crescendo at the end of a week in which his White House has ramped up its accusations against Russia and its attacks on Donald Trump for his complicity in those attacks.
Reuters announced the Obama press conference in a one-sentence statement on Thursday evening, offering no details on what it might focus on. But this announcement comes nearly simultaneously with a new CNN article which reports that Obama is vowing “retaliatory action” against Russia. This comes amid another CNN article which states that the Obama administration’s gloves have fully come off after Donald Trump‘s casual dismissal of the increasing evidence that Russia rigged the election in his favor.
So what precisely does this all portend for tomorrow’s press conference. As has typically been the case during President Obama‘s tenure, he hasn’t fully shown his hand in advance. But doing the course of this week, increasingly damning reports have surfaced regarding Russia’s role in the election and Trump’s complicity, culminating today with the revelation that Putin himself personally oversaw the hacking that installed Trump as the winner. This comes as White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, who speaks on Obama’s behalf, has ratcheted up his anti-Putin an anti-Trump rhetoric with each passing day. Obama’s press conference is at 2:15pm EST on Friday and will likely be aired live on all major news networks. If you enjoy Daily News Bin, consider making a contribution:
