President Obama held his final press conference of 2016 today, and while he began by addressing the humanitarian crisis in Syria, the topic quickly shifted to the role which Russia played in rigging the presidential election on behalf of Donald Trump. Obama is not constitutionally empowered to do anything to stop Trump from taking office (despite the insistence to the contrary on the part of some of his supporters), but he did take some key shots at Trump and the Republicans and Russia, aimed at focusing the national dialogue.
Obama pointed out that until recently, the Republican Party was dead set on viewing Russia as a dangerous enemy. Yet now that former Soviet Union KGB agent Vladimir Putin has rigged the presidential election on behalf of Republican nominee Donald Trump, some rank and file Republicans suddenly seem to have no trouble embracing Russia and all of the anti-American things it stands for. Obama put it bluntly: “Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave.”
The President’s press conference comes just three days before the Electoral College is set to finalize its vote, even as various rumblings continue to come from pockets of Electors who seem intent on preventing Donald Trump form being elected. Even if the Electoral College does elect Trump on Monday, the various aggrieved parties can still try to put the matter in front of the Supreme Court, which could theoretically do anything it wants with regard to the election.
